The Picture Perfect Holiday Card

0

It is that time of the year again, time to think about getting those holiday cards out the door.

Let’s be honest, these cards take a lot of effort. What happened to the days when we would just find a cute card with an uber glittery tree and just sign our families name on the inside? You know, run to Target and pick up a box of 24 cards with a snowman, Santa or a cozy fireplace? No thinking involved, just signing your name one hundred times (I know, the hand cramping from signing every card is literally a pain)!

Those days are long gone. Now everyone has entered the digital age and sends their personalized holiday family picture cards. We all get them, the ones with the perfect children in their matching red plaid outfits. They will tell you how Timmy has straight A’s, Susie made the dance team, Dad was promoted and Mom won her ladies tennis league this year. I feel like these Christmas cards are becoming a competition of who had the most successful year and the most picture perfect families (kind of like having a high school reunion every December).

I know we all love opening these cards to see all of our friends beautiful families. To see how the kids have grown and changed over the year. I have gotten caught up in the photo card frenzy. I feel the pressure every year to send a great Christmas card. I have two toddler boys, so there is no such thing as a perfect family picture. I would scroll through our pictures from our fall photo shoot and try to find the perfect one. That one diamond in the rough where the boys were looking at the camera and smiling, and let’s be honest, one where mom’s hair was on point and no double chin. There was nothing I could find that I would want to send to a hundred people to analyze. I struggled trying to find that snapshot in time where everyone was on their best behavior. Yes, I am sure I am overthinking it. I am sure most of us give a our cards a quick glance and throw them in a pile.

I found myself laughing at a lot of the pictures from our family sessions. The boys are crying, tackling, rolling on the ground. Our photographer never put her camera down during those moments. That’s us. That’s my true family. So I decided to roll with it. We are not a picture perfect family, honestly nobody is. With a little creative text to caption my screaming children, I decided to send my cards showing my true family.

I felt a load lifted off my shoulders when I decided to not care about the perfect family photo. To those who get that awesome family photo, good for you. For the rest of us….Merry Christmas friends, this is us! Well, us minus mom’s double chin.
