5 Ways to Not Forget Who You Are in the Depths of Motherhood

Motherhood is beautiful, exhausting, fulfilling, and all-consuming often all at once. Somewhere between school schedules, bedtime routines, and keeping everyone else afloat, it’s easy to forget the parts of you that existed before you were “Mom.”

But staying true to yourself doesn’t require a big life overhaul. Sometimes, it’s found in small, intentional moments that remind you who you are beneath the responsibilities.

Here are five ways to hold onto you while still showing up fully for your family.

  1. Rediscover Simple Joys That Calm Your Mind

For me, that looks like coloring.

There’s something incredibly grounding about sitting down with a Cozy Café coloring book, my Ohuhu alcohol markers, and absolutely no expectations. No productivity. No end goal. Just quiet focus. It’s creative without being demanding, and it gives my brain permission to rest.

If you’ve ever thought coloring was “just for kids,” let this be your permission slip. Simple hobbies can be incredibly powerful.

  1. Read Because Reading Is Underrated (and So Good for the Soul)

Reading is one of the most underrated forms of self-care.

A good coffee, a quiet bookstore, and a book you’re excited about can genuinely soothe the soul. And the magic doesn’t stop there if you cant make an escape, bringing that experience home matters just as much. Setting aside dedicated time to read allows you to escape in a healthy way, one that recharges instead of numbs.

You don’t have to finish chapters quickly or keep up with a reading goal. Just read because it feels good.

  1. Pick Your Show and Make Time for It

Not everything has to be family viewing.

Choosing a TV show you actually love and saving it for after the kids go to bed is a small but meaningful act of reclaiming yourself. Watching one episode at night without folding laundry or scrolling your phone can feel surprisingly grounding.

It’s not about binging. It’s about having something that’s yours to look forward to.

  1. Normalize Laughter, Connection, and Date Nights (Big or Small)

Connection doesn’t have to mean fancy plans.

Sometimes it’s date night.
Sometimes it’s staying up late laughing with your spouse.
Sometimes it’s just reconnecting without distractions.

Those moments of laughter and ease matter. They remind you that you’re still a person—not just a parent or a partner managing logistics.

  1. Schedule Your People Because Friendship Takes Intention

One of the best things I do for myself is schedule a girls’ night every two to three weeks.

Sometimes I go to my friend’s house after her kids are asleep. Sometimes she comes to mine once my kids are in bed. We stay up too late, talk, laugh, drink, vent, and just be ourselves.

It’s not extravagant—but it’s sacred. Friendship doesn’t always happen organically in motherhood. Sometimes you have to plan it, protect it, and prioritize it.

A Gentle Reminder

You don’t have to lose yourself to be a good mom.

Staying true to who you are doesn’t mean escaping motherhood—it means weaving you into it. Quiet moments. Creative outlets. Books. Shows. Friendship. Laughter.

You were never lost.

You were just busy loving everyone else.

And you’re allowed to love yourself too.

In 2023 my family traded in our flip flops for cowgirl boots and made the move from the Alabama Gulf Coast to Nashville with my husband, (Ben), two girls (Collins and Quinn), our big fluffball (Lionald) and our humble turtle (Shelly). I went from an in-office setting literally on the beach, to a work-from home setting in the music city and could not be happier with the change. We love to shake things up, experience new things and enjoy new perspectives. I am an extreme optimist, a daydreamer, a full time Marketing professional, a part-time writer, and a “whenever I can” adventurer! I like to think of myself as a free spirit, but realistically motherhood most often times binds me to a solid plan and scheduled days. I drink way too much caffeine and am a certified drink goblin (One for caffeine, one for hydration and one just for fun!) Being a mom most oftentimes demands behaviors such as going out in public and being social, but my favorite place in the world is on my couch. As a marketing professional I love telling stories. I enjoy sharing adventures, tips, tricks and my favorite mom-approved places to visit, experience, and see! I cannot wait to share my perspectives and opinions with this community and I look forward to connecting with other Nashville moms in our new home.
