Summer Family Road Trips You Can Do in a Weekend From Nashville

0

There is something magical about piling the kids into the car, grabbing snacks from Buc-ee’s, creating the perfect road trip playlist, and heading out for a quick adventure. Summer always feels like it should include at least one road trip, but let’s be honest most of us don’t have time for a week-long vacation.

The good news? Nashville is surrounded by incredible destinations that are close enough for a weekend getaway but far enough away to feel like a true escape. Whether your family loves beaches, mountains, theme parks, or charming small towns, these family-friendly road trips are all within driving distance.

Gulf Shores & Orange Beach, Alabama

Drive Time: About 7 hours

If your family is craving sugar-white sand, turquoise water, and endless sunshine, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach should be at the top of your summer road trip list. While the drive is a little longer, it’s one of the few destinations that truly feels like a full vacation in just a weekend.

Families can spend their days building sandcastles, searching for seashells, taking dolphin cruises, exploring Gulf State Park, and enjoying fresh Gulf seafood. The area also offers mini golf, arcades, water activities, and plenty of family-friendly attractions.

For accommodations, I always recommend booking through Spectrum Resorts. Their properties offer the convenience of a resort with the space of a vacation rental, making them ideal for families.

The Beach Club Resort & Spa is a destination in itself, featuring multiple pools, dining options, tennis courts, activities, and plenty of room for kids to roam. Just down the road, Turquoise Place offers spacious luxury condos, incredible Gulf views, water amenities, and family-friendly resort features.

One of the coolest reasons to visit this summer? In honor of America’s 250th birthday celebration, The Beach Club is hosting Friday Night Fireworks every Friday all summer long. Families can enjoy a spectacular fireworks show over the Gulf, making an already memorable beach vacation even more special.

Perfect for: Beach-loving families

Chattanooga, Tennessee

Drive Time: About 2 hours

Chattanooga is one of the easiest and most family-friendly road trips from Nashville. Kids never seem to get tired of exploring the Tennessee Aquarium, riding the Incline Railway, and visiting Ruby Falls.

The city’s walkable downtown makes it easy to park once and enjoy the weekend without constantly loading everyone back into the car.

Perfect for: Families with younger children

Pigeon Forge & Gatlinburg

Drive Time: About 3.5 hours

When it comes to family road trips, it’s hard to beat the Smokies. Between Dollywood, mountain coasters, mini golf, dinner shows, and endless attractions, there is something for every age.

If you can pull the kids away from the attractions, spend a day exploring Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Some of the best memories come from simple hikes, scenic drives, and waterfall stops.

Perfect for: Families who like nonstop activities

Bowling Green, Kentucky

Drive Time: About 1 hour

This underrated destination is perfect when you want a quick getaway without spending half your weekend in the car.

Families can explore Mammoth Cave National Park, visit the Corvette Museum, enjoy Lost River Cave, and take a boat tour through underground cave systems.

Perfect for: Adventure-loving families

Atlanta, Georgia

Drive Time: About 4 hours

Atlanta offers big-city fun with plenty of kid-friendly attractions. Spend the weekend exploring the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, Zoo Atlanta, and the Children’s Museum of Atlanta.

There are also great restaurants, parks, and family-friendly hotels throughout the city.

Perfect for: Families looking for variety

Huntsville, Alabama

Drive Time: About 2 hours

If you have a child who loves science, rockets, or space, Huntsville should be at the top of your list.

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center is packed with hands-on exhibits and interactive experiences. Families can also enjoy botanical gardens, hiking trails, and family-friendly restaurants.

Perfect for: Future astronauts

Louisville, Kentucky

Drive Time: About 3 hours

Louisville offers a fun mix of attractions for all ages. Families can visit the Louisville Slugger Museum, Kentucky Science Center, Louisville Zoo, and waterfront parks.

The food scene is excellent, and there are plenty of family-friendly hotels downtown.

Perfect for: Sports-loving families

Asheville, North Carolina

Drive Time: About 5 hours

For families who love the outdoors, Asheville is a beautiful mountain escape. Explore the Blue Ridge Parkway, go waterfall hunting, visit the Western North Carolina Nature Center, and enjoy local restaurants and outdoor adventures.

Summer temperatures are often cooler than Nashville, making it an especially appealing getaway.

Perfect for: Nature-loving families

Lake Cumberland, Kentucky

Drive Time: About 3.5 hours

Rent a boat, spend the day swimming, and enjoy a slower pace at one of the South’s most beautiful lakes. Lake Cumberland is a fantastic option for families who want to unplug and spend quality time together.

Perfect for: Families seeking relaxation

Birmingham, Alabama

Drive Time: About 3 hours

Birmingham has quietly become one of the best family weekend destinations in the South. The McWane Science Center is always a hit with kids, and Railroad Park offers plenty of room to run and play.

The city’s growing food scene makes it a fun destination for parents, too.

Perfect for: Families who love discovering new places

Some of the best family adventures are just a short drive from Nashville. Whether your family is craving mountains, museums, lakes, or a weekend at the beach, these destinations offer the perfect excuse to pack up the car and hit the road.

In 2023 my family traded in our flip flops for cowgirl boots and made the move from the Alabama Gulf Coast to Nashville with my husband, (Ben), two girls (Collins and Quinn), our big fluffball (Lionald) and our humble turtle (Shelly). I went from an in-office setting literally on the beach, to a work-from home setting in the music city and could not be happier with the change. We love to shake things up, experience new things and enjoy new perspectives. I am an extreme optimist, a daydreamer, a full time Marketing professional, a part-time writer, and a “whenever I can” adventurer! I like to think of myself as a free spirit, but realistically motherhood most often times binds me to a solid plan and scheduled days. I drink way too much caffeine and am a certified drink goblin (One for caffeine, one for hydration and one just for fun!) Being a mom most oftentimes demands behaviors such as going out in public and being social, but my favorite place in the world is on my couch. As a marketing professional I love telling stories. I enjoy sharing adventures, tips, tricks and my favorite mom-approved places to visit, experience, and see! I cannot wait to share my perspectives and opinions with this community and I look forward to connecting with other Nashville moms in our new home.
