Finally, it feels like spring has arrived and cooler temperatures are behind us. This means it is time to start planting your summer garden! Historically, Nashville’s latest frost is sometime in April, but the Farmer’s Almanac posits that by mid-April you can go ahead and set plants out (just be sure to watch the weather and cover them if we experience an unexpected cold-front).

Nashville Area Local Plant NurseriesAlthough starting a garden may be intimidating if you have never done it, buying plants (in lieu of starting from seeds) is an easy entry point into this world! Tomato plants, herbs, and jalapeno pepper plants are all relatively low maintenance, but yield yummy results. Put these plants in a raised bed with garden soil and good sunlight. Water every day when it gets hot. By mid-summer, you should have tomatoes and peppers you can pick from the vines and more herbs than you know what to do with.

There are many wonderful, local businesses in Nashville where you can buy plants in lieu of Lowes and Home Depot (although of course those are fine options too). Many of the employees of these local shops will also be very knowledgeable and helpful to answer any questions you may have.
