Whether you’re squeezing in one last summer road trip, driving to the grocery store with kids in tow, or preparing for a new year of school drop-offs, it’s always nice to have something fun to listen to in the car that’s entertaining and rated G! While I have my go-to weekly podcasts I follow (current favorite: Good Hang with Amy Poehler), my 6-year-old son has recently curated his own personal podcast library he loves to follow. I have to admit, I love them too because they’re fun, clever, engaging and, did I mention educational?
Here’s a peek at my son’s current podcast picks that keep him entertained in the car and at home. Let me know in the comments which ones made the cut with your crew or if your family has a few favorites we have yet to discover!
Brains On!
Brains On! is one of the top science podcasts for curious kids who ask tough questions about the universe that stump the average parent. The main host always has a kid co-host that brings a fun, curious perspective and calls on scientists and other experts to answer hard-hitting questions like, why are brains squishy? Why do feet stink? Do video games really rot your brain? There’s also always a fun mystery sound to try to guess. This show proves that science can be a ton of fun and will entertain everyone, including mom and dad!
Smash Boom Best
Smash Boom Best will get the whole family talking because it’s all about debating, but not about boring stuff. Every episode takes two cool things, smashes them together, and lets the listeners decide which is best! Spongebob vs. Minions, Minecraft vs. Lego, Barbie vs. Mr. Potato Head. It’s fun, lighthearted, and helps kids develop a healthy perspective on debating while teaching them how to back up and stand by their opinions.
Story Pirates
I absolutely love the concept of Story Pirates: Take stories written by kids across the country then turn them into sketch comedy and songs! Each episode features talented comedians, songwriters and celebrities like Lin-Manuel Miranda, Kristen Bell, Julie Andrews and more that bring these creative tales to life! Your kids (and you too) will get a kick out of the original stories and songs and will probably be inspired to write their own short story. They can even submit them to the show for consideration!
The Zooquarium
You don’t have to have an animal lover at home to enjoy this podcast. The Zooquarium dives into the curious world of animals and answers questions submitted by you, the listener! Why do sloths poop on the ground? Do crickets have ears? Why do tigers have stripes? Guests with animal expertise share facts about featured animals in an understandable, lighthearted manner. Each episode is only about 15 minutes long and easily keeps even the busiest kid engaged.
Wow in the World
A funny, super-entertaining way to share the world’s latest scientific discoveries in this big, wide world. Through kid-friendly storytelling, Wow in the World hosts uncover the wonders of some of our biggest questions relating to science and technology. Do fish sleep like humans? Why do cats love tuna? And my son’s favorite episode: Smart Underwear?! The Science of Farts, Gut Health & the Human “Flatus Atlas.” I guarantee this show will spark some pretty interesting dinner conversations.
