How to Make Summer Fun at Home (Without Overcomplicating It)
There’s something special about a summer that doesn’t feel over planned. The kind where the days are long, the kids are barefoot, and the best memories happen right in your own backyard. You don’t need big trips or packed schedules—just a few simple ideas, a little creativity, and a willingness to lean into the chaos.
Here’s how we make summer feel like summer at home!

Turn Your Backyard into a Water Park
You really don’t need much to keep kids entertained for hours—just water.
Our go-to favorites:
- Slip n slide (classic for a reason)
- Inflatable pool for easy, all-day play
- Spraying each other with the hose (bonus points if it’s on the trampoline—yes, it’s chaos, but the fun kind)
- Water balloons… lots of them
- Inflatable water slide for a special occasion like a summer birthday, or a end of summer party.
One of our favorite traditions? A neighborhood water balloon fight. It starts simple and somehow turns into an all-out event. Add in a few field day-style games (relay races, sponge toss, etc.), and you’ve got a full afternoon of entertainment with zero screens involved.
Mix in Simple Outings
Staying home doesn’t mean never leaving the house, it just means keeping things easy and local.
A few of our regular spots:
- The Nolensville Rec Center pool
- The Brentwood Splash Park
- Trips to the zoo (and the playground there is so good, it’s a must)
We’ll also hit up local parks or just pack snacks and make a morning of it. Nothing fancy, just enough to break up the week.

Add in Little “Extras” That Feel Big
Sometimes it’s the smallest things that feel the most special.
- Set up a lemonade stand (kids love it, and it keeps them busy)
- Go roller skating for a throwback summer vibe
- Movie night with popcorn and a concession stand
- Backyard field day style games – potato sacks, ring toss, etc
- Water balloon fight! We love to involve our neighbors for this one
These are the kinds of activities that don’t take much planning or money, but end up being the moments your kids remember.
