The city was settled around 1784 by Daniel Smith, whose house Rock Castle, completed in 1796, is maintained as an historic site. The city is named for William Henderson, the first postmaster. Hendersonville existed as a relatively small town in the Nashville area, until the completion of the Old Hickory Dam in 1954.

Hendersonville was one home to famous acts such as Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty and Taylor Swift.

Mary’s Magical Place– Veteran’s Park
140 Scotch Street
Mary’s Magical Place was the first all-inclusive playground in Sumner County designed for, but not limited to, children with special needs. Adults from all ability levels are also invited to experience Mary’s Magical Place with their loved ones!

Mary’s Magical Place pays homage to Mary Elizabeth McAuley, who had an infectious smile and was much-loved by her community. Mary was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and epilepsy early in her life, which led to her being wheelchair-bound. Most playgrounds that Mary encountered were unable to accommodate her wheelchair; this meant Mary wasn’t able to enjoy playgrounds in the same way her brothers were able to play.

After Mary’s death in 2015 at 14 years old, members of the community wanted to create an all-inclusive space for everyone of any ability level to enjoy in honor of Mary; it was through this gesture that the idea for Mary’s Magical Place was born. Through years of planning and fundraising, Mary’s Magical Place opened to the public in September 2018.
