Amanda moved to Nashville three years ago from Los Angeles with her hubs (Jason) to start the baby-making process closer to his Southern-large family in Florida. Their zoo is now complete (?) with a dog, two cats, and a toddler (Mixon). She works at home in East Nashville where she writes and produces web shows (for money) and young adult fiction (for love and possible future money). She loves this small big town—especially when the fireflies and cardinals come out. Amanda gets stupidly excited about books, cool breezes on hot days, and anything that makes her son laugh with his whole body.

Confessions of a Recipe Hoarder

I didn’t touch a stove until I was almost 30 years old. No, I'm not kidding. I obviously had lovely, spoiled early years. My parents cooked for me until I moved in with my...

Breaking Down the Preschool Decision

In a few months, just after his third birthday, my son Mixon will begin attending his fourth preschool. Four schools in three years. Well, two years, actually—because he didn’t start until after he was a...

Five Moms Who Rocked History

Happy Women’s History Month! While it may seem like we don’t need a whole month focused solely on women’s history, it's my opinion that (sadly) we do. I didn’t get to learn about many...

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Menstrual Cup

I’ve always been a bit of a hippie at heart. I’m not into war, I love the Beatles, and I definitely wore bellbottoms when I was a teenager (in the late ‘90s). I’m not...

Romance is Dead and Life is Awesome

For some people, Valentine's Day is a lovely excuse to let the person you're with know how much they mean to you. For others, it's a source of stress and un-met expectations. Still others are...

10 Things I Hate About Preschool

Pretty soon, my two year old will begin his third preschool. That's correct. His number of schools experienced is more than the number of years he has lived. This is my fault—not that of...

Silly Adults, Picture Books are for Kids

I adore reading to my kid. We read at least two picture books a day—usually more. As an aspiring children's book author, I know how much goes into crafting and telling a story in...

Trying to Keep the Urban in Suburban

Everyone says it's going to happen. You have kids, your priorities change. When I was pregnant (and blissfully ignorant), we bought a Craftsman house in East Nashville, built in 1920, full of character, original...

Hauntings at the Hermitage — The Experience

We are currently moving. Today, in fact. The day before Halloween. And since I have no idea what my new neighborhood does for Halloween, I sought out alternatives. My two year old is just...

A Parents’ Guide to Parenting Trends

Mommy Wars. We’ve all heard about them, but I have yet to witness an actual battle between helicopters and free-rangers, attachment parents and tiger parents. If I had to guess, the helicopters and tigers...
